My good friend, Glen Wheeler, wrote an article in the Southeast Outlook, the Southeast Christian Church newspaper, on this subject.  I thought I want to make a devotional on this subject, using some of his material, so here goes.

“Everything has a name.  Every country has a name. All animals have a name.  All sports teams have a name. All medicines have a name. All trees and plants have a name. Towns have names and even churches have names. People have names.
Many great eternal truths are found in the Bible relating to the word name”.

“A good name is more desirable than great riches.”  Proverbs 22:1
“You are to give Him the name Jesus.” Matthew 1:21
“I have come in My Father’s name.”  John 5:43
“Repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ.”  Acts 2:38
“The Apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the name.”
cts 5:41

“We sing about the name: “Blessed Be The Name”- “All Hail The Power of Jesus’ Name”- “Take the Name of Jesus With You”-
“His Name Is Wonderful – “Glory To His Name”.

Three places in Scripture the name Christian is used:  Acts 11:26 “The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.”
Acts 26:28 “Then Agrippa said to Paul, “Do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian?”
I Peter 4:16 “However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.”

As a Christian, we are to revere the name we wear and bring honor to the Lord’s holy name.  Philippians 2:9-10 reads, “Therefore, God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth…”

I love the name “Christian” because it speaks of Him whom I love. The name “Christian” is a noun describing those who follow Christ.  A Christian is one who professes belief in Jesus as the Christ (Messiah) and demonstrates the qualities taught by Jesus such as love, kindness, humility, etc. Bearing the name “Christian”, we acknowledge that we belong to Him, that we are His possession.   Guard the sacred name, “Christian” wisely, and dishonor it not.
