GOD’S PRESENCE

Where is God?  May I share some thoughts concerning the presence of God.  God’s presence is seen in the progressive revelation of Himself.

In person…God in olden times spoke audibly, directly with His children.  Out of heaven, He directed them.  In the Garden of Eden, God walked and talked with Adam and Eve.  Sin ruptured that fellowship.
In a special place…God said concerning the Ark; “And there I will meet you and I will speak with you from above the mercy seat.”  Exodus 25:22   The Ark was housed in the Tabernacle, a moveable tent so it could be carried by the Israelites through the wilderness.  In the Promised Land, the Ark was housed in the magnificent Temple. This dwelling place of God was destroyed by the army of Rome in the destruction of the city of Jerusalem 70 A.D.  This was the end of God’s presence in a building made by hands of men.
In God’s Son, Jesus…God revealed Himself fully in Jesus.  “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”  John 1:14  The Incarnation, God in flesh.  “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by His son…”  Hebrews 1:1-2
In the Holy Spirit…Jesus returned to Heaven, but He did not leave us alone.  He sent back His Spirit, the Spirit of God, the Spirit that is holy to dwell in the lives of His followers.  The primary purpose of the Holy Spirit was to direct the Apostles in all divine truth. This commenced on the Day of Pentecost in the establishment of the Church as recorded in the second chapter of Acts..
In the Church…
the followers of Jesus is where God now dwells. The Church is the continuing incarnation of the Christ.
The living presence of Christ in the world is through His body, the Church. The Church is not an organization to be formed and ruled by man but an organism with the head being Christ.  The Church is God’s place to dwell. His place to work. His instrument of action.  The Church is not the truth but the dispenser of God’s Word.  The Church is made up of every obedient believer in Christ Jesus.

The Christian houses the Spirit of God.  The Christian is the temple of God.  Nothing should be deliberately done to hurt God’s instrument.  Nothing should be deliberately done to hurt God’s influence through His people.  Christians are God’s display case.  God is seen through the Christian.

“Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”  Matthew 5:16
