“Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.”

We have been looking at Jesus through what He said about Himself  being the “I AM.”
In John 11:24, we have the most astonishing claim of Jesus when He said, “I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE, HE WHO BELIEVES IN ME WILL LIVE, EVEN THOUGH HE DIES; AND WHOEVER LIVES AND BELIEVES IN ME WILL NEVER DIE.  DO YOU BELIEVE THIS?”   He said this to Martha at the funeral of her brother, Lazarus.  Then Jesus proceeded to prove that He was God’s Son by raising Lazarus from the dead. This is the greatest miracle that Jesus performed. He had raised others from the dead but not like Lazarus who had been dead for four days and whose body had begun to putrefy.  Many of the Jews who saw this miracle believed in Jesus. While others were shocked and told the Pharisees.  The religious leaders could not deny it either.  They were concerned about an open conflict with Jesus which would bring Rome down hard on them. So, they decided that they must get rid of Jesus and sought to kill Him.  This miracle of the resurrection of Lazarus led to the crucifixion of Jesus.

Staggering is Jesus’ promise of Life instead of death. But, that is what we need.  Death is our greatest enemy. It robs us of wealth and health in this world.  Medical science can do wonderful things in prolonging our physical life.  Our government can do great things.  We are getting closer to  cradle to the grave security. Still the government cannot give us life after death.  Spiritualist, faith healers, cannot bring a person back to life from the dead.  All the money in the world cannot keep us from dying nor give us the assurance of living forever.

Jesus is telling us that He can do that for us, give us Life; meaningful, purposeful, eternal life.  We need to understand that Jesus came to destroy death by replacing it with life. The emphasis of the Bible is not life after death but life instead of death.  Jesus lived through this experience man calls death.  He came back from the dead, resurrected.  Only by the power of God could He do this.  But, by doing it He paid for sin one and for all and took away death’s license to do business.  On the basis of  Christ’s resurrection and that God raised Him from the dead, He can promise to all who believe in Him,  “BECAUSE I LIVE, YOU SHALL LIVE ALSO.”

Believe the great news that Christ lives and you can live too, here and hereafter.
“Because He lives I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives all fear is gone.
Because I know He holds the future.
And life is worth the living just because He lives.”
