THE COLD WITHIN

Someone has said, “People don’t care how much we know, until they know how much we care.”

Committed to care is what being a Christian is all about. To refuse to care is to commit the greatest sin of all.  What is the greatest sin of all?  Selfishness is the sin of sins.
I want you to read carefully this bit of verse entitled, “The Cold Within.”

“Six humans trapped by happenstance in bleak and bitter cold,
Each one possessed a stick of wood, or so the story is told.
Their dying fire was in need of logs, but the first man held his back,
For all the faces around the fire, he notice that one was black,
The next man looking across the way saw one not of his church,
And he wouldn’t bring himself to give the fire his stick of birch.
The third man sat in tattered clothes, he gave his coat a hitch,
Why should he put his log to use and warm the idle rich?
The rich man sat back and thought of the wealth he had in store,
And how to keep what he had earned from the lazy, shiftless poor.
The black man’s face bespoke revenge, as the fire passed from sight,
For all he saw in his stick of wood was a chance to spite the white.
The last man of this forlorn group did nothing except for gain,
Giving only to those who gave to him was the way he played the game.
Their logs held tight in death’s still grasp is proof of human sin,
They didn’t die of cold without, they died from cold within.”

In case some might think that this is just fanciful poetry, we turn to the Word of God to hear it say the same.  James 2:14-17  “What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food.  If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed.” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”

I John 3:17-18  “If anyone has material possessions and sees his bother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.”

Our Christianity must be practical.  We must put our faith into action.  We must practice what we profess. A Christian must work at being unselfish.   Commitment to care means you give, give of yourself through money. time, talent to help God help the needy. The greatest need of all people is to know Jesus.  May we do by word and deed, whatever it takes, to show people, JESUS.
